This is one of the rarest quarters issued, the 1804 date has its magical rarity due to the silver dollar, but the quarter and dime and cent all have their own rarity. Lot 818		1806. NGC graded AU-55. Bright and lustrous, with a decent strike for this notoriously weakly struck variety. This one shows far more definition than commonly seen, with full wing feather definition and most of Liberty's curls intact. Excellent surfaces and strong eye appeal. A totally untoned example. Lot 819		1822. PCGS graded MS-62. B-1, Rarity-2. Mostly untoned save for elegant light silver-gray which spans the surfaces in a uniform manner. The strike is bold on all the design elements, with sharp stars surrounding Liberty, and all her finer hair curls boldly defined. This is a tough date in all grades, particularly so in mint state. Given the revisionist standards of today, we feel this quarter graded long ago and may upgrade. A terrific coin for the date specialist. Only two varieties were coined in 1822 for quarters, this one and the other being the prized 25/50 reverse bungled denomination. Housed in a First Generation Holder. Only 64,080 struck. Lot 820		1831. Small Letters. B-4, Rarity 1. NGC graded MS-65. Nicely golden toning over reflective fields. The strike is sharp on all the obverse stars, and the surfaces are amazingly clean for a Capped Bust quarter. Rarely are these early coins found with such superlative surfaces, making this a memorable offering. Destined for an advanced type or date collection. Lot 821		1838. Browning 1, Rarity 1. PCGS graded MS-64. The centers are nice and bold. Violet and deep blue colors around obverse rims while the reverse is mostly white. A great coin for a type set and this is the final year of issue of the Capped Bust quarters, as the Liberty Seated design was launched in the later portion of 1838 after these Capped Bust quarters were struck and released into circulation. Lot 822		1840-O. No Drapery. NGC graded MS-65. Old time golden toning with deeper russet accents near the rims. The strike is fairly sharp save for a touch of softness on Liberty's head, as nearly always seen on this issue. The surfaces show incredible preservation. On this particular coin, the O mintmark is placed somwehat right of the R in QUAR, on many others the mintmark is located above AR of that word. Given how splendid this coin is, and its illustrious pedigree, we anticipate strong bidding when it crosses the auction block. Lot 824		1858. NGC graded Proof 66. Lovely blue, lilac and teal toning on both sides. The strike is formidable, as expected for a Proof, with each of the radials crisp on the stars, and all of Liberty's hair curls well rounded by the dies. The eagle shows all his wing feathers, and the shield lines are deep and well formed. A gorgeous coin and condition rarity at this lofty grade level. Only 300 struck. Lot 827		1873. Arrows. PCGS graded Proof 67. Lovely deep rainbow toning on both sides with flashy yellow shades at the rims, deepening to royal blue through the stars and legends, then fading to a more elegant lilac gold at the centers. A rarity for the Arrows at the date, issued only in 1873 and 1874 with the Motto reverse, hence prized by tye and date collectors alike. Lot 833		1878-S. PCGS graded MS-65+. CAC. PQ. A white gem that offers blazing luster and creamy frost on the devices. Examination finds little to distract the eye, as the surfaces show only the tiniest signs of contact. A condition rarity that is certain to satisfy the discriminating numismatist. Although 140,000 pieces are reported to have been struck in San Francisco that year, this issue seems much rarer than this number would suggest. Pop 1; 2 finer in 66. Lot 838		1896-S. PCGS graded MS-64. A white coin with semi reflective fields. A popular key date with a modest mintage of 188,039 pieces. Of course, most survivors are found in very low grades, and demand for those is high as collectors desire to complete their sets. Here is a stellar 1896-S quarter, one which offers near gem surfaces, strong luster and abundant eye appeal. For the Barber quarter specialist, this quality of this date and mint one of the hallmarks of any advanced collection. A coin of this calliber will certainly command attention anywhere it is shown. Lot 851		1795. A over E in "STATES". Overton-113. NGC graded AU-55. A marvelous example remarkably free from marks and defects. Lightly toned in bluish-grey colors that are quite even and attractive on both sides. The surfaces are clean too with no distracting circulation marks. This variety is quite popular for the blundered spelling of STETES initially, then corrected to STATES. Such blunders are known in other denominations, but they are always popular with collectors. Here is one of the nicer examples to survive with this spelling blunder, and a perfect coin to welcome into your advanced collection. Lot 856		1818. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice sharp strike throughout with lovely sunset toning encircling the borders on both sides. The surfaces are satin smooth and show just a few stray marks from an even higher grade. For identification, there is a minor bagmark located just above the eagle's head in the small field. Lot 857		1820, 20 over 19. Curl base 2. PCGS graded MS-63. O-102. This is an elegant example of this intriguing overdate. The engraver had a most difficult time hiding the 1 beneath the 2, and even more trouble with the obvious 9 below the 0! One has to wonder why they bothered updating the die to reflect the current year when in other instances in this era we know that coins were struck using dies dated a year or two prior to the current year for coinage. Nevertheless, this creates a wonderful opportunity to collect these handsome coins, especially when found at the Choice grade level. Here is a memorable offering for the date, or overdate specialist!
